Just Days Old, This Fawn Is Still Testing It's Legs
Fawns are born annually in my yard in Princeton, British Columbia Canada. This little fawn was born maybe two or three days ago and it's mama (the doe) has kept a close eye on it ever since. I caught them in the yard tonight and shot this video through the bathroom window. Filmed June 26, 2024 by W. George Elliott, Similkameen News Leader

A Poor Showing of Crabapple Tree Blossoms

Every May, the crabapple tree at my home in Princeton, British Columbia Canada bursts into bloom with an impressive display of bright pink blossoms. The show lasts a few days. This year, that did not happen. Sure, the blossoms came out but not as bright, not as many, and they did not last as long. Filmed by W. George Elliott on May 17, 2024. I would be surprised if there were any surviving salmon eggs in the flooded rivers in B.C. and Wash. State. All that water probably scoured the gravel off the bottom or buried the eggs in several feet of gravel and mud.

keep in mind the water has to go somewhere, now that this area is being fixed and raised, somewhere else is bound to flood in the next atmospheric river event.

it's a critical gap that will need to be repaired as well as the sections that were destroyed upriver - we will be advocating for that as this section of rails to trails is part of the Trans Canada Trail route across the Province from Castlegar to Hope - These rail trails are public assets for recreation that cannot be underestimated by the Provincial government. This is a difficult time for many throughout Southern BC and especially Princeton. Our hearts go out to everyone that is impacted by the floods and their aftermath.

The problem is that the river level gets higher over time as a result of debris and sediment buildup. Dikes need to be reinforced and built to a higher level every few years. Otherwise, don't build homes or other structures on flood plains.

Notice the overgrowth in the trenches that are to drain water and keep it flowing. Water doesn't move too well when the trenches are full of branches, roots, and other types of debris. And you get that woke question. Should we have all our ditches and canals, spillways cleared before the rainy season? If you noticed the brush was quite well established so this problem was in an advanced stage of poor stewardship. Meaning that maintenance was a low priority. Probably dating back to other times of water washout issues. Translation. Preventable.

Horrible land management in BC for decades. And now the citizens pay again as they paid those people to make bad decisions. Municipal, provincial, and federal governments all failures. 2nd biggest piece of real-estate on the planet with all the resources in the world and yet are Municipal, Provincial, and Federal governments combined are more than 2 trillion in debt its a scam. We should have a sovereign wealth fund worth over 50 trillion and absolutely no hardships.

If you look in BCRDH, the photo archives of the province, you can see that intense flooding occurs in almost every low lying town on a regular basis. Doesn't diminish it in anyway, just makes me wonder who planned these areas to have housing and farms in regularly flooded flood plains? Look at the archive photos for Trail, for Princeton, for many many towns in BC. Seems like they flood almost every 7 years. Might be a clue to stop building in those low areas and build on more stable areas. I notice that the mines and the smelter in Trail were built high enough to be safe from the floods?
